Transmission problem
1997 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Automatic 100000 miles

put my car in reverse today and it stayed in reverse. Also reversed car, parked it and couldnt restart. We know we've had problems with the ignition switch, but would that effect the transmission.

Where you able to shift it into drive at all, or did the shifter stay in reverse? What is the ingnition switch doing

Nope its still in reverse. It wont fire up. We had to tow it home. It still wont start. But more importantly it wont get out of reverse.

Can you disconnect the shift cable on the transmission and see if you you can move the transmission linkage on the trans its self. Or see if the shifter can be moved after you disconnect it
