I have been having a problem with my old car I have. We have had it to the shop about 10 different times and nobody seems to know why we keep smelling raw gas and it knocks and the timing has been set and it also wants to run on when you turn it off. Once the timing is set it runs fine for awhile then it goes right back to the same old stuff again.

It sounds like you have excessive wear in your timing set. Adjusting the timing is only an intermittent fix. Chain stretch is usually the culprit, which is very common in high mileage motors. Not an incredibly hard fix for the shade tree mechanic.
