Transmision problems 1997 camaro

Here is my problem. My 1997 (it has 234,000 mi) 6 cylinder camaro is haveing transmision problems. It has reverse neutral and they both work fine but when you put it into drive it seems like it goes in to gear but then you give it gas it seems like it is trying to take of in 4th gear. Then when you put it into to first it works like it sould and you can shift it manualy and put it into drive and it downshifts fine. I wondering what the problem could be. thanks for looking
