I have a 2001 Chevy Camaro, 3.8L V6, 5-speed transmission. The car is making what sounds like a hissing noise, but it is only noticeable in third gear. The shop I took it to tells me there is a bad bearing in the transmission, and that I need a whole new or rebuilt transmission, which is very expensive. Is there any other way to fix this problem other than installing a new transmission? Any advice would be appreciated - thanks.

Sorry,You don't have a choice, there is no other way to fix it,you should have had it checked when it first started making noise,it could have been corrected with a fluid change. Sorry,Lou

I don't know if anyone suggested this but find a good, I will call it "junk yard" for use of a better term. They will most likely have a decent 5 speed for you. I would not suggest this with an automatic. There are some good "yards" across the Country that have good, quality, salvaged parts.

Depending onwhere your at you can find a good pick a part yard that lets you pull the parts you need and they can be much cheaper than a regular salvage yard.
