Transmission problem

2001 chevy blazer 140,000 miles 4.3 v6 4x4 its the transmission it will not take drive I mean when you put it into drive it does not go forward. All the other gears are fine p, r, 1, 2. What is going on.

Has there been a check engine light on?

The info given of the cable adjustment is wrong and probably will not help, if you really want to check the cable place the transmission in park and set the parking brake, pul cable from the shift lever on the transmission and see if the shift lever will move forward at all if so adjust the cable accordingly, but if your guages rare reading properly I would suspect another problem let me know
