When the engine is cold it misses a lot especially with normal driving. On hard acceleration and and idle once it is warm it seems to run ok. Could be be the plugs? This summer going through the mountains the engine severly overheated and I had to coast down the mountain with the engine off to get to a station to add coolant. Could this have caused the plugs to go bad?

I would sure change plugs first. It could be a cheap fix. Going through the mountains, the air is thinner and you have to push the engine harder to climb. This also creats a "lean" condition in the engine which can make them overheat. The O2 sensors will sense the lack of oxygen and adjust the fuel mixture accordingly.
