The tail gate key would not work and we oiled it and now the handle goes around and around. The key does not move anything. It will not turn anything - does not move. We feel it will break off in the cylinder if we try any harder to move it. How do we get to the part to fix it and what is the problem?

The lock cylinder is frozen up. I would suggest calling a lock smith. They can usually get these open

Its not a real easy job to get that lock assembly out. You will need two people, its easier to remove the back window that way. Remove cover on inside of tailgate, remove window. Now you have to remove the conecting rods and the 2 bolts for the lock assembly. They are hard to get to and to see. Carefull with the back window, theyre not cheap. Then take the assembly to a lock smith, that will save you the labor charge of them removing it. Good luck

Its been cold here so we have not fooled with it yet but we can't find the flat head screws we were told to remove from the inside on the panel. Its harder than we thought it would be that's for sure! It would be easier if we could get it open to work on. Thanks for all the info.

Is your back window power or manual? If its power your should be able to roll it down from the dash switch. Then open tailgate and you will have to use a screwdriver to lock the latches on the sides, That way you can hit the switch to roll it up with the gate opened, thats where the 2nd person comes in, have some1 hold the glass as its going up so it does not break, Stop half way and remove the 4 window bolts, 2 on each side. Remove window and continue with lock removal.

Its manual. The screws seam to be below the floor board along the bottom of the tail gate. We don't know how we are going to get to them.

Wow, thats going to be tough. Take all the screws out that you can and you may have to bend the cover down. The window has to be all of the way up or removed to access the 2 bolts for the lock, you might be able to do it like that but dont get in a hurry, its not a fast job.

We got it open and the part out and ordered and it will be here Tuesday --- $18. We took a piece off the bottom to expose the screws, once the panel was off we just opened the latch and the window opened. Then we pulled both levers and the tailgate opened. The lock was held in with a clip. It takes patience. We are please it was just a $18 fix. Thank you all for your help.

No problem, it sounds like the manual is easier than the electric. Good Luck
