Car started flashing the hold light and then about a week later it started to flash the check engine light in addition the the hold light. The vehicle drove rough until a few miles down the road when the lights would go off. Eventually the car just will not start anymore.

Random Misfire normally caused by vacuum leaks or bad fuel-

Misfires can be caused by worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak spark (weak coil, bad spark plug wire), loss of compression, vacuum leaks, anything that causes an unusually lean fuel mixture (lean misfire), an EGR valve that is stuck open, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure.
