1999 Chevy Astro rEAR END NOISE

THE REAR END HAS DEVELOPED A NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIK I HAVE STUDDED SNOW TIRES. I CHANGED THE TIRES AND IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. PEOPLE TELL ME THIS VAN HAS REP FOR BAD REAR DIFERENIALS. ANY INFO?

My 1999 astro rear end differential had to be rebuilt 2 yrs ago it had a howling noise

It may not be and is probably not as bad as your worst fears. First, climb under the vehicle and grab the driveshaft and see if you can rock it back and forth showing sloppy universal joints while in park. The driveshaft connects to the rear differential at what is called the "pinion shaft". When mine got noisy, a car repair buddy of mine replaced the pinion bearing and the pinion seal for a hundred bucks.
