1987 Chevy Astro
This is regarding a Mercruiser 4.3 L, 262 CID, boat engine (same as 1987 Astro).
We just completely rebuilt this engine, including re-boring, shaving the heads, and we replaced the oil pump. With a high volumn pump.
After all this, we overlooked shimming up the distributor and ruined it's gear. At the time we replaced the gear we also replaced the oil and filter in hopes of retrieving all the gear shavings.
Upon taking the boat out again, it ran fine for about a half hour, but the oil gauge stayed spiked. Then we detected a slight engine noise (like oil starved) and we suddenly lost most of our oil pressure and limped a very short distance back to the dock.
The next day, I started the engine in order to warm up the oil and drain it, and to change the filter again. Watching the oil gauge, it registered about about half way on the dial (twice the pressure we had yesterday when it dropped), but would begin spiking again as it approached 2000 rpms.
I'm stumped! Any help will be appreciated.
have the same problem?
