I took my car in for a service and got told the camshaft magnets were leaking. it got changed plus a lubrication service from a reputable garage. Got the car back and after about 10 minutes of driving the check engine light came on, this had never happened in the 6 months of driving this car so a bit of a coincidence in my mind. The next day I took the car in and got told that the timing chain/tensioner/gears are bad. The timing chain had been done 5000km/3000miles previous from a Mercedes specialist. (the reason I bought the car).
Would check engine light come on for timing chain issues? The car runs extremely smoothly.
Why was the timing chain issue not picked up initially? I just want to arm myself with as much info as possible. Before I confront the garage
Also, I called the mechanic that did the timing chain previous, and he assured the work was done correctly and to spec with genuine parts.
Still stuck with check engine light. Could it be that the work they did is sending a fault code that's wrong?

To me it sounds like the parts they installed are defective or not done correctly. Do you have the trouble code by chance? That would help us see what's going on. With Mercedes they need to use OEM parts. Is the sensor what you mean by magnets? Check out the images (below). Please upload pictures or videos in your response to the problem so we can see what's going on.

Thanks for the reply. So, I bought a relatively cheap obd2 scanner. And it gives me a p0022 code. "A" camshaft position actuator circuit "bank 2" . I have erased it and driven the car and so far, no engine light...
If it does pop up again, I might take it to the mechanic that did the timing chain the first time for a proper diagnosis and peace of mind.
It just amazes me that a mechanic could think a person that stupid that it's all coincidence and my biggest question is why all of this was not picked up initially if the timing chain was the issue. They're the most expensive garage around here.

Yep, it happens, let's just hope it was an innocent mistake. Please get back to us on the conclusion, if you could that would be great.
