I am getting a tapping/ticking noise. The noise is present even when the key is in the on position without the engine. My check engine light is saying knock sensor. In addition, for the last several months I am about a liter low of oil every 650 miles or so.

My mechanic has said I need to replace the engine. He has not looked at it, this is just based on the noise and the code. Please help!

The first thing for you to do is go find a new mechanic, If you have a ticking noise with key on and engine off, this may just be a faulty relay clicking, as for a knock sensor, this is a sensor that detects engine detonation and allows the engine to adjust the ignition timing accordingly, it will have nothing to do with this ticking noise you are hearing, a faulty knock sensor will characteristically give you engine pining on heavy acceleration as the ECU can't adjust the ignition.

Thanks. What would you say if I also told you that up until now engine ran whisper quiet, now I hear a "sewing machine" noise with engine on and the check engine light is intermittent, and other than adding oil every couple of weeks (garage could not find leak or evidence of burning oil), I have no other performance issues. Do you think it is just the sensor or valves/pistons are worn out?

May be valve lifter noise, get the oil pressure tested first.
