I put the car into any gear and it doesn't move. The car knows what gear its in because the reverse lights still come on and I can hear the engine rpm change when I shift it. The transmission that came with the car had this problem so I swapped one that is supposed to be working into the car and it has the exact same problem. There is plenty of fluid in the transmission and no fluid comes out of the transmission cooling lines. The fluid still heats up inside the transmission. Just wondering what else could be a contributing factor.

Just to be clear, you replaced the entire transmission and it still does the same thing? If that is the case then the shifter has to be the issue but it sounds like the manual valve is moving if the RPM is changing when shifting gears.

Do you know what transmission you have? Is it the 4EAT?

We need to check the line pressure and make sure this is correct as well. Was there anything that you transferred over from the other transmission?

I attached the info on this below for your review.

Let me know about this info and we can go from there. Thanks

The transmission in the car is a M91LE. It's not the shifter as I fitted the linkage myself and it works just fine. The car will spin the wheels a tiny bit when I initially put it into drive and give it some throttle but it wont keep the wheels spinning, they just stop after a few seconds. I was thinking it could be a lack of fluid in the torque converter which isn't allowing it to engage and drive the pump therefor not pumping fluid into the torque converter to allow it to function correctly. Could this be the case and would taking the torque converter off and prefilling it fix the issue?

I think you are on the right path that the fluid is not getting put through the converter but that would not be due to the converter not being filled. The issue is most likely the pump is not providing enough pressure or the valve body is not routing the fluid properly. Meaning there is a leak in one of the valves or seals allowing the fluid to bypass where it needs to be in order to get the unit to move the vehicle. Does that make sense?

I've just picked up another transmission off a new version of the car for $100.00 that I know was pulled from a running car so putting it all on and that should fix it. Definitely making sure the torque converter is prefilled and is seated correctly.

New transmission fixed the issue as the old torque converter was snapped off inside the pump. A few issues discovered now that its driving.

1. Very loud sound coming from one or both wheels (believed to be wheel bearings).
2. Car is lacking a lot of power which I think is the ignition timing not being done properly.
3. Steering feels very stiff but power steering is working and it sounds like its rubbing on something in the column.
4. An oil leak has developed but not sure where it's coming from yet.

That is great info. Thanks. Plus those are all issues we can help with but we need to keep each post to one topic so that others can find the solution that you come out with. They will not find the answer to those issues under this heading and we want to make sure those solutions are found by others because I am sure others will have something like them. So we want to get the new posts started and get them solved just like this one.
