2001 Buick Regal V6 Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 79000 miles

My service engine soon light came on and Pep Boys pulled a P0440 - evaporation system fault code. What could the problem be?

I have the same problem with my 01 Regal. The light comes on when the fuel gage goes to below 3/4, shuts off when when the gas is 3/4 to full for a few days. Any ideas? I tried the new gas cap but it didn't help.
