I bought a 1997 Buick Regal and as I was bringing it home from the owner the check engine light came on and hasn't went off sine the auto parts store said it was the EGR sensor I wanted to know what does this do? Also they told me I had to put platinum spark plugs in it or else it wouldn't run right is this correct?

EGR A.K.A Exhaust gas recirculate. It is a emission component that takes the nitrus oxide from the exhaust and puts it back into the cylinder cooling it down and helping it remain inert and not produce smog when it comes out the tail pipe. Also helps the gas stay warm in the cylinder causign better fuel efficency.

You dont need platinum plugs, but they do help.
