1986 Buick Lucerne car starting without the cam moving

my husband is a mechanic and ran into a rather interesting problem today at work, on a 86 buick lasabre how is it possible for the engine to start without the cam moving if anybody has any suggestions please let me know so i can give him some ideas. thanks dana

Hi Dana:
I never heard of such a thing. If the cam isn't turning, I can't think of how it could run. Many of the cylenders would have had valves open, so they wouldn't have worked and the ones with closed valves wouldn't have gotten any fuel. Plus the cam sensor wouldn't even send a signal to the ecm so it shouldn't have been getting spark.

You got me stumped.
