I am looking to purchase a 1996 buick century special 4cyls. Went to test drive the car, and its in great condition and great mileage, but the service engine light soon on and is lit up orange. What are some possbile problems? I know there can be many, but what are some common ones. Also, what are prices on average to fix these problems. The car also needs to new brakes, could that have anything to do with the light being on because the car has been not driven in awhile.

I don't think the brakes are causing the service engine soon light to come on. Honestly that light coming on could be under a 100 or over 1,000 to fix. So why don't you have the owner of the car test drive with you over to a auto part's store like auto zone and have them read the code's and bring me back the code number's. Then I can give you my advice on the light.
