My car has always had a code 53 but drove fine for the last year. Now when I step on the gas to accelerate(like going up a hill) it cuts off. It seems to run ok until I have to accelerate. Leading me to believe it's not the fuel filter. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Check the fuel pressure if okay start checking the throttle position, manifold absolute pressure and mass airflow sensors and also check for an exhaust restriction

Thanks for reply.

I do have exhaust restriction somewhere. Could a bad catalytic converter be the problem?

Get it gas tested before and after to confirm it, or disconnect it and see what happens-
