My car listed above Sport I know has fairly bad rear drum brakes. They squeak when I press the brake. My question is (and I discovered this by accident) that when I'm stopped, pressing on the brake with the car in drive and idling. If I use my momentum and rock the car back, I hear a popping/knocking sound coming from what sounds like under the car or rear of the car. It's a pretty noticeable popping/knocking noise. Is this noise coming from my brake system, particularly the read drum brakes or something in the rear braking system? If I'm in neutral or in park, and I rock the car back it doesn't make that same sound. Thanks for any help you can give.

Without hearing this noise, I suspect this is the drive-train or gears in the transmission and differential that is actually rocking backwards and then forwards and they clunk.

Is it possible for you to get this on a recording so we can hear what it sounds like? That may help us pinpoint the issue. Thanks

Here is some sound. I tried my best, but I only have my phone. I kind of cut up and edited together the parts with the best sound. The first bit is from inside the car (the squeaking noise is from me rocking the seat) and then I put the phone under the back end of the car. Hopefully this helps.

That is pretty obvious, but how exactly did you get that to happen? Where you standing behind the vehicle and rocking it forward and reverse while it was in gear or in park? Or were you using the vehicle's weight by letting off the brake and then pressing it quickly to rock the vehicle?

Anytime you hear the noise, the car is in drive, brake pushed down so the car is not moving, and I rock the car back using my body weight while sitting in the driver's seat while continuing to hold down the brake.

Oh. Okay. Thank you for that clarification. That makes perfect sense now. That is normal. What you are hearing is the gears in the transmission/differential actually turning backwards due to the rocking back and forth and they are banging into the gear tooth behind it. So this is called gear clash and due to the vehicle rocking like that you are able to hear it. Clearly the rocking motion is not a normal or expected motion that the vehicle does so that is why that would be considered normal or characteristic.

Let me know if you have questions. If not, thanks for using 2CarPros.
