I have tried to change bulbs but that didn't fix it. (The first bulb I did change not only was completely black, but had melted some of the plastic it plugs into)
What fuses do I need to start off with checking? I'm not the most mechanically inclined and would appreciate your advice!

Hello my name is Dave.

It sounds like the most likely issue is the bulb socket, the plastic piece that the bulb plugs into. This is a problem I have encountered with your model of car quite a few times. The repair is fairly straight forward, you will have to buy a socket specifically made for your car. once you have the socket the wires will be the same color as the one you have now. Cut each wire, strip it and use a butt connector to connect the new socket.

I found the tutorial on YouTube on doing the butt connectors and shrink wrapping them:

I feel confident this will resolve your problem. please keep us to date on your progress and thank you for using 2CarPros!
