The hood switch is the first place to start.

We checked the hood switch and you were right. Thank you. We have now disconnected this and the alarm has not gone off as yet.
The head lights keep getting fogged up. We have cleaned them and after awhile they fog up again. Is there any way of sorting this instead of buying new lights?

BMW was warranty replacing these for quite a while. If you turn on the lights, does the fog dissipate within 2-3 minutes? If so it is normal operation. Replacement is certainly an option.
