1998 BMW 528 Warning Light

My "Check Engine" warning lamp just came on. What are the possible causes or implications of this? The manual says this indicates a fault in the emissions system?

The check engine light is on for an emissions related fault. I assume there isn't driveability issues. The gas cap may have been left off or loose. Have the fault read out and dealt with appropriately. Clear the fault and drive the car.
