I've replaced my 88 528e exhaust from under the car without much difficulty.

However, on my 92 525i, the connection between the rear and center muffler is not bolt on but is via a connecting sleeve. This is welded on my still original muffler.

It's a show stopper if it should be welded. Would 2 U clamps suffice in lieu of welding. Also, there appears to be a heat shield welded on. Is that another show stopper. If I take the parts in to have the job done, would they use the old heat shield or would there be a bolt on I should hunt down.

I am not sure why you would think it is welded, it is bolted in the middle, unless otherwise of course.

Your schematic shows the center resonator (1) and the rear muffler (2). Part #3 is a welding sleeve which joins the two and per your diagram says it's a welding sleeve.

The question is whether that has to be welded, in which case I can't do it, or whether U clamps like from the old days would suffice.

The bolts on the front of the first muffler ( 1) attach to the catalytic converter, which isn't shown.
