2004 BMW 325 6 cyl Automatic 80,000 miles

Have received these codes for exhaust system, as system says it is running lean so cleaned the MAF, ran fuel injector cleaner through the gas and replaced the air filter. Had the system reset, and codes went off for ~ 3,000 miles but now have come back on. Was planning on replacing the fuel filter in case there was slight blockage, but wondered what else would be feasible.

And the faults are the same? It might be a vacuum leak or a bad MAF.

Yes, codes are the same: 0174, 0171. Checked last night the elbow hosing and all hoses seem to be OK, and haven't heard any hissing.
How would I go about checking if the MAF is bad?

That would require access to proprietary scanning equipment to check the reported air flow through the MAF.

Or replacement with a known good unit, resetting faults and driving the car.
