2001 BMW 325 milage is scrambled, why? Any ideas?

the milage on my car is scrambled, what would cause this? Cant read the milage, looks like all 88888, at first you could somewhat still make out the numbers but now the 8888's are bright and cant read.

easy or hard fix?

at first I wondered if BMW scrambles at a service interval to make you go in but now im curious if its more then that.

It is due to pixel death (for lack of a better term) or perhaps a cluster failure, it is not uncommon. The mileage is "written" to the key, and that information can be retrieved at the dealer through one of the key readers. The replacement of the cluster will require recoding.
