1989 BMW 325 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic? Miles

When I try to start my car, the key only turns to the first position and then stops. I am able to turn the wheel, so it goes far enough to release the 'hold' on the wheel. I have been told that it's the cylinder that is bad and needs to be replaced. Is this something I can do, or a locksmith can do or does a mechanic shop need to handle it? I was also told that there are two types of installations, one where there are bolts holding it in place and in later models the heads of the bolts were broken off requiring drilling to remove the cylinder. Is mine from the older style? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The bolts you are referring to are called fracture bolts and I recommend seeking a BMW pro to assist you for this repair as the steering lock replacement is quite tricky and is not something I would recommend taking on unless you have experience with BMW cars.
