I am in some serious need of help on this code. First let me tell you about my used 1999 323i BMW or better known to my dad as purchasing someone else’s problem! In this cases he maybe right.
I had several codes and was able to clear them all except the infamous Peake Tool Code 68 – VANOS EXHAUST REFERENCE VALUE. Can you please tell me what this is and how to get rid of it for good. I gotta get this car smogged and with the wonderful check engine light lit – you know the deal. Failure.
What have I done to clear this code? Other than change out the Vanos Solenoid. Nothing else. And I did try to search this in the forums. But I really am looking for the miracle answers. Please Help.

I am pretty good with hand tools but I feel like a dog chase his tail. Never gonna win.

Symptoms? Clear the code, start the car. Check engine is gone, run it for 5 minute or up to 30 + minutes – No problem. SHUT the car off and restart and WHAMMM. Instant CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. Clear the code again and start the process all over again.
Not losing power. Oil light stays on for a while (yellow) but then goes away.

I’ll be waiting for your repy. THANKS in ADVANCE.
You guys been big help in the past.

The car was produced during a transitional period and I will need the last 7 of the VIN to correctly ID the car.

The fault seems to be one for the exhaust cam sensor, if it is original, it probably needs replacement. They fail with age. Here is a link to a groovy site I use all the time: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=AM33&mospid=47718&btnr=11_2170&hg=11&fg=15

I tired to use an aftermarket CPS, but I was told that the aftermarket parts are not the best to use. Do you think that the Vanos seals have anything to do with it?

Dr. H.

The aftermarket CPS did not work. Should I purchase a OEM? Or Do you know of any independent BMW mechanics in San Diego? 92128 area code? I read plenty of Negative review about dealerships and their over charges.

Dr. H. Don't take this the wrong way. BUT OF COURSE!. If you could I would greatly appreciate it. I was quoted $130 from Encinitas BMW to diagnose the problem, I was gonna call Brecht BMW next. I live in Rancho Bernardo. Like I said earlier... My trust level in dealership is very low... (Too much on the overhead side - they have to overcharge)

Do you have a shop or are you mobile? I hope you are mobile, since I have no plates yet - Need to pass smog.

How can we get in touch? My Email address connected to this site has been inoperative for several months and in my disgust of trying to get it working, I just quit using it. I reside in Carlsbad, not too far from you.

SupraDrifter. You came to the right place. DR. Hagerty did an awesome job on my Vehicle and he was very fair on his cost / service. I can tell you that he will NOT give up on your vehicle. My car needed the Timing reset ( I was way off - Auction car), Vanos needed to be Cleaned and verified, and Many other issues. I would say that we need to keep this man super busy with work. Thanks again Dr. Hagerty.
