Idle problem

Have an Audi 85 GT Coupe. Tried to replace an airfilter then found out was none inside.I had to cut the new filter in half so I could fit it in since it's not easy at all to place the filter in.
anyway, afterwards the car would start but not hold the rpm steady and as soon as I let the gas pedal go would cut off. So I took the filter out thinking the filter it's causing it not to run steady.

But this did not fix the problem and the car still cuts off if I don't press on the gas. Seems like it's missing fuel or air in my opinion. Never had any problems with the rpm idle for many years.

is it possible that something got broke or shut down?

I had the same issues with my Audi too where my engine starts but will not hold the rpm steady. And when I hit the gas, the engine stops. I hope this is not serious for I can't afford buying new parts. I also think that the filter is busted.
