Your bank 1 sensor 2 oxygen sensor is on the driver's exhaust after the catalytic converter. All you really need is a 7/8 wrench to undo the oxygen sensor and you need to follow the wiring to unplug it. HTH.

I changed out 3 of the 4 O2 sensors on my 2001 Audi A6 2.7T but cannot reach the dirver's side (bank 1) #1 (upper) sensor. Do you gain access by removing the battery?

No, you might have to take some of the intake tubing off to get to it. Its a PITA to get to it. You get to it just like the Bank 2 side. You just have to move what you need to get to it. Are you getting codes for oxygen sensors? Why are you replacing all 4 sensors?

Parts dealer strongly recommended changing out all 4 sensors since car has 110k miles on it. Claimed they slowly burn out by this age causing drop in performance and MPG.
We'll try to gain access to bank 1 sensor 1 (the one cited in car's error code message) anyway possible in the morning. Too bad Audi engineers didn't provide a back door to get this normal repair done.
