The plug that the greenish wire plugs into has broke is there a cheaper way to fix it other than replacing a good working alternator?

A picture of what you are talking about would have been helpful, but if it is part of the alternator, then yes, you have to replace the alternator. If it is part of the wiring harness, then you can buy a pigtail to repair that.
