97 SL2 No oil reading on dip stick

Checking the dipstick there is no oil registering, but when the cap is taken off to add oil, there is oil visible, like it is full. Any ideas? Any cost cost estimate. Car has about 100k on it and has been good until this.

That is really weird. Did you check the oil right after you shut the engine off. The oil is pumped from the bottom to the top and then gravity lets it drain back down. It would be tuff to clog the top. Take the cam cover off and check. Replace the gasket for the cam cover while your at it. Should be due about now anyway.

Check the oil with the engine cold first.
