Grinding noise and burning rubber smell from pulley assembly, loss of coolant from overflow. No white sludge on dip-stck no white smoke from exhaust.
won't turn over any more either. :

What you describe is that the belt was loose or the altinator bearing went bad. With belt off check the altinator pulley and see if it is free or makes any noise.
Also check the pulleys on the ac unit and power steering, to see if the are free. A guess is that it is the altinator bearings.

This recently happened in my 93 Legacy sedan - It turned out to be my Power Steering bearings eating themselves alive.
