Second gear is actually not "going in all the way". This can be caused by wear on the eyelet ends of the shift cables. They round out on both ends and excessive play developes. Check the grommet ends that attach to the transaxle shift arms. Some twisting movement is OK. There shouldn't be any large amount of play either up and down or back and forth without the shift arm moving.

The ends are not replaceable seperately. You must replace the entire cable. Best to do so in pairs.

Lubricating the eyelets at the transaxle might help. They should be lubricated once a year.

Good luck and let us know. :)
