This is my little story for my 1997 VW golf 105000 miles. I was getting a loud noise coming from what it seemed to be the front left tire that increased with speed. It would do it even with the gear engaged or with the gear at neutral or with the engine on or off gear engaged or not etc. I took it to a shop and they told me it was my transmition. I changed that and when they gave it back they told me I also needed to change the front left bearing. When I drove the car the noise level didn't change at all so I took it back and had the front left wheel bearing changed as well. When I took it back things sounded better, but it seemed to produce a similar softer sound at ~65mph but I didn't give much attention to it. Now the noise is back and it's pretty bad between 60-70mph from what it seems to be again the front left wheel area. Below or above this speed I can't really hear anything to be honest. The other thing I've noticed is that when I'm driving at the noise level speed and I turn right the noise disappears completely.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

My VW mechanic is Central Torrance said that you would know it when the main a-arm bearings go out. Brake heat could make them make more noise. When you transmission makes noise in the fifth gear area it could be because of low oil. You will see the 5th gear is off to the side where the oil needs to be highest.
