1996 Questions for all other cars car temperature indicator

I have a holden commodore, 1996 make. For the last few days the temp indicator in my car has started to rise largely and often while driving it would reach the max. N so much so that once the car broke down while driving. At that instance there was quiet alot of smoke emission and sum burnt smell. What could be the reason and what are the chances of this damaging the car engine?

Hi there,

You may have a stuck thermostat, blocked radiator of cooling fan is not coming on. You can destroy the engine if you over heat it too many times, Is it using water/ coolant? Is it on LPG? Get a cooling system check done before you do some real damage, I just hope that you have no gone to far already.
