1996 dakota sport 4x4 V8 5.2L 318 when trying to shift into 4wd, my shifter inside the truck has a hard time going into gear. It used to slide right in with a little pull, now I have to really pull and push to the side for it to go into gear. When going out of gear again I have to pull to the center and really give it a push forward to disengage. What could be the cause of this and how could I address fixing it?

Sounds like you might have some rust on shifter mechanicm/linkage. You have to get under the veh and spray the shifter and linkage then move it thru the shift range several times. Tou may need to do this a few times before it loosens, hope this helps
