Awesome site! I just purchased a 1988 190e w/ 121k on it nice car but when I start it it has low rpms and acts like it's getting power surges and revs between 10 and 20 rpm with a vrrooom noise then when I put it into gear it feels like it might stall(sometimes does!) Once I get it going there is hesitation when accelerating but runs great when on the highway. There is also a oil smell when I get out from driving any ideas? I just switched to copper plugs, changed oil/filter, put in many fuel system/oil conditioners and changed the OVR fuse (red 10 amp behind battery) LOVE this car but need to find out what's wrong. Thanks!

Hey, I just had that prob with my old merc, it idled really rough, and it sounded like the timing was out or something, and anyways I went to the mechanic and it was like the electric assist thing to the brake or something, it was stuffed. And it made sense cos I do remember having to press rather hard on the brakes at times. Its like the big round thing it the top left hand corner under the hood. Im not an expert, quite obviously! But yeah, it could be what you have too.
