The transmission on my wife's car gave out. The mechanic told me he could not find a used transmission anywhere and that a transmission rebuild would be the only way to fix it. The price he gave me would be 2000 including parts. Is it a huge difference to get it rebuilt for that price or wait and see if a used one gets found? My main question is what are the pros and cons of a rebuilt and a used transmission. Thank you.

Hi jigut80,

A rebuilt trans would have the seals and disc clearances checked and would last you longer, a 3 year period should be no problem.

Trans of the era are more reliable except for the transfer shaft and differential. What is the problem with the trans?

Getting a used unit is like trying your luck, you might be lucky and get one that might last you a couple years or it might last you a few months.

Personally I would recommed getting it rebuilt. Since a used unit is hard to come by, it would not be easy toget one that is good even if it is available.

2nd point is that the model is more than 10 years old and if any used units were available, its lifespan is more or less over, unless you are lucky to get a unit that had been recently rebuilt.
