I'm on my third alternator (and 3rd battery)in about a year and a half; the new alternators last about 6 months, then the battery gradually dies, and the engine won't start. My mechanic has a theory that the AC compressor could somehow be causing the problem. Any ideas?

Hi stephenri,

What was wrong with all the alternators?

Did you test the alternator loaded and unloaded charging rate?

If the theory is about AC compressor causing the alternator to fail, what is the reason behind it? I don't see any relation.

I would suggest checking the crank pulley, if it has a dynamic damper, make sure the outer ring is not free wheeling.
