Adding a Smart key? Smart key programming?

Taking the steps to add a smart key for the car. One step is to take the new (un-programmed) key and hold the key next to the START button and wait for a beep, then place the key on the passengers seat and wait for another beep as confirmation of successful programming of the new smart key.

The new key refuses to give the confirmation beep on the passenger seat. We've already moved the primary key outside of the car to avoid radio interference and it still does not give us the confirmation beep.

It was suggested that the passenger seat was faulty and to replace the seat ! Sure, I could replace the $1,000+ dollar seat in the pursuit of obtaining a spare key but. Really? There must be a work-around.

Do you have any work-arounds or thoughts on how to complete this task?

Roger

Did you try various location on front passenger seat for the unregistered key, and also the direction the key is facing? Here are the instructions in the diagrams below to show you how to program a new smart key. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Yes, apparently the idea is to get the key away from the START button, and the Toyota programmers box goes overboard and suggests that you place the key on the seat. No place in particular, just so that they can be sure the key is away from the START button.
