Is it possible I can replace the key and remote for my 2007 Saab 93 with a more common type? Is there a way to replace it with another brand, for example GM, that one will last longer than the generic online version and two will be able to replace for life without worrying that the company or product is no longer available?

The original replacement unit from the dealer lasted about one year before the rubber starts to deteriorate from humidity. Now the dealer is out of the original one and will not have any more due to Saab going bankrupt. Others types I have found online, are just the cover and they do not work. Brand new the trunk button did not work and within 2 or 3 months the unlock and lock buttons stopped working.

Have you asked the dealer to try to search for dealer old stock at other dealerships? As far as aftermarket, they are all about the same and will not last the life of the vehicle.
