Car had been parked for about an hour, running fine just before. It started with no hesitation, after starting it made a knocking/flapping noise around the alternator area, then just died after about 5 seconds. When I tried to restart it, it wouldn't. Car will turn on and crank but it wont turn over. Alternator is fine, almost brand new battery, all belts including timing are fine. Tested to see if plugs with throwing a spark, they are not. In need of some advice.

So the engine will turn over but will not start? Check all the cables running to the alternator and check the serpentine belt just to make sure its still attached. What size engine is it?

The cables are all attached and look fine, the serpentine belt is intact and in good working order. It's a 2.4L 4 cylinder automatic transmission.

There could be so many reasons because of this I'm not real sure where to start. It could be a internal engine problem, electrical issue, ignition issue, security/alarm issue, emissions issue, ect..

How do you know the noise is coming from the alternator? Could it just have been the heat shield shaking?

There is a bulletin about a recall on the B+ terminal on the alternator that goes out frequently.

Check for power going to the ignition control module and we can go from there.
