You need to bleed the system. To bleed the fuel system, first make sure fuel filter is full. You can fill with diesel if it is empty. Using a wrench, crack open injector fuel line for the number one injector and turn the engine over. This will pump fuel and air to cracked line. Once the air is pushed out the engine will start. The engine will most likely run rough at first until all the air is out of the system. Once it starts, retighten the injector fuel line.

Is fuel coming out of the injectors while cranking?

Diesel all the way to the top filter will start and run for 30 or 40 seconds then dies again

Seems there is still air trapped in system. Crack each injector individually till no more air is being pushed out of the injector to see if it works.
