normally computer updates are done at a dealer and they dont' stop the light from coming on. the updates normally deal with driveability issues and noting more.

It depends on what the issue is. Many times the original tolerances for setting a specific code may be too loose and the manufacturer will write new code to address the problem. What is the specific code number that is causing the problem?
