They don't really use sequential engine numbers any more. The numbers you will find will be part numbers.

It is actually the VIN.

The complete VIN# is not listed anywhere on the engine

Yes, I'm aware of that but since the entire number doesn't exist. You cannot know what specific vehicle the engine came out off by simply having the engine. You can however determine if a car has it's original engine if you have the car and entire VIN# to compare.
