can a voltage regulator on a 2005 saturn ion be replaced w/o the alternator being replaced? I have mechanic that has had my car for months, he has since put an engine in it, replaced sensors, told me it needs a new battery, We originally got the car back from him in jan for a few days after 2 months of taking the car because the first engine was no good. We buy the battery, and now he said it's not that, it's the voltage regulator.

it's internal to the alternator. you can ask at the parts store to see if the carry it. might be better to just get another 1. you can save a lot with a used part from junk yard.
