2005 ford taurus. Several months ago cruise control started turning on and accelerating on its own, but we could not get the cruise to turn on normally. Could the powertrain control module have anything to do with that?

May be a faulty activation switch, will it shut off when you touch the brakes?

No but does shut off when you hit the gas and let off quick

You will need to use a scanner with a live data read, and see what is going on with the switching for the cruise control, and check for any active codes, thee will not set a check light.
