2005 Ford Ranger, 4.0 manual, dash battery light comes on when I get over 2000 rpm after I replaced the dead battery. Is it the belt or the alternator?

With the light comming on when you get over 2000 prm's then I would say it is in the belt slipping. Check the belt tensioner to see if it is keeping the belt at the right tension. If it is working tight then you can take it down to someplace like advance auto parts and they can check the output of the altinator.
