2004 Toyota 4Runner 4×4 not operating

My 04 toyota 4runner 4×4 is not operating, the light for the 4×4 is showing. What part do I need to get the 4×4 back to functioning because of the weather. I bought the vehicle with the 4×4 not operating and I have been driving the car for two weeks with no problem, but I am having problems driving in the snow.

Is it an electric shift 4wd unit? If it is, have you checked to see if there is power to the actuator on the transfer case? If it isn't electric shift, have you checked the linkage to the transfer case? Have you checked to see if there is vacuum to the front axle?
