I have had this vehicle from new and I have always had a problem changing from 4wd to 2wd. I have never been able to make sure it was fully in gear with the 4wd light on the dash flashing. I now have a more serious problem because I am driving along with no problem when the 4wd light starts flashing and then I am getting a very serious noise. If I stop and turn the engine off I can then start it again and theres no problem.

The system uses solenoid valves and vacuum to activate the 4WD and quite often these solenoids fails causing the system to malfunction with the dash indicators blinking to warn you of it.

The present problem of the lights blinking suddenly could be due to a fault with one of the solenoids leaking, allowing vacuum to pass through instead of keeping vacuum out. This would result in the 4WD trying to engage while vehicle is moving and thus the grinding the noise.
